Study seeks secrets to successful nursing homes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Predictive Results has launched a pioneering project that could improve the quality of nursing homes across the state, and perhaps nationwide.

Predictive Results and the Florida Health Care Association launched July 1 a comprehensive e-mail survey of the administrators of the state’s 625 nursing homes.

The survey identifies administrators’ leadership styles through a behavioral assessment tool that has reduced turnover and improved performance at nursing homes across the country. A New England nursing home chain has reduced its turnover rate to 42 percent, less than half of the industry range of 85 percent to 112 percent, by using the behavior assessment tool that is the basis for the FHCA survey.

Researchers from Eastern Kentucky University and Predictive Results will review the results of the FHCA survey for statistical evidence that establishes correlations between an administrator’s level of patience, for example, and the ratings that their nursing home receives under the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Five-Star Quality Rating System. The goal is to learn how leadership styles and staffing decisions affect ratings and patient care.

“We don’t come into this with any preconceived ideas,” Predictive Results President Steve Waterhouse said.

The survey runs through Aug. 31. Results should be available by mid-September.

The Florida survey is intended as a pilot program. Similar projects may be launched throughout the country by early 2011, through Predictive Results’ parent organization, PI Worldwide®.

The survey is based upon the Predictive Index®, a scientifically validated behavioral assessment tool that has been used in organizational settings for more than 50 years. Nursing homes and other health care facilities use the Predictive Index® to ensure that employees are placed in the appropriate positions.

Looming talent crisis in health-care workforce creates dual dilemma
Local expert offers insights for improving operational efficiency and patient care

Fleming Island, Fla., March 24, 2010: While much of the conversation on health-care reform is focused on the current reform in Washington, PI Worldwide®, the premier global organization specializing in human capital analytics, leadership and sales development, forecasts an upcoming talent crisis as two trends –increasing consumption of health-care services and the “baby boomer” retirement from the workforce –collide.  Steve Waterhouse, CEO of Predictive Results, a Florida-based affiliate of PI Worldwide, works with local companies, including the Borland-Groover Clinic, LBA Group and LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, on how to plan for and succeed in a rapidly changing and volatile business environment through new approaches to leadership development, training and recruiting.

While research varies, in the next 10 years it is projected that overall health-care spending as a percentage of the gross domestic product in the United States could exceed 20 percent while an estimated 76 million “baby boomers” stand poised for retirement.  These conditions create the need for talent management strategies that can cost-effectively address talent turnover and shortages while preparing for greater patient demand for quality health-care services.  By strategically aligning all members of the organization — administrators, health-care professionals, technicians and aides into positions that naturally reward those needs, both organizations and patients will benefit.

“Health-care based organizations are seeking a solution that not only helps them operate more efficiently, but one that also improves overall patient care.  Often times, employers rely on a generalized approach or assumptions when they should be digging into the specifics,” Waterhouse notes.  “In an industry where details, science and data are part of the day-to-day environment, health-care organizations can really benefit from applying these rigors to their talent management challenges.”

What can health-care organizations do to address the coming talent crisis?  Waterhouse offers a variety of tips and strategies, including the following, to executives:

  • Create and/or nurture a strong brand. A strong health-care employer brand can reflect an organization’s reputation, culture, positioning in the marketplace, and future aspirations.  A key component of the branding process is the development and promotion of an exciting employment value proposition, which should attract the strongest health-care talent that aligns closely with the organization’s strategic direction and core values.
  • Know what it takes.  Understanding exactly what attributes are critical for success and uncovering employees at risk of burning out or leaving early can offer a strategic advantage when it comes to navigating the talent landscape.  It can also uncover new ways to approach the process, new pools of talent to tap into, and help ensure that the core attributes of the brand continue to be reflected.
  • Cultivate from inside. Look inside the organization to identify and develop a strong internal pool of high-potential candidates who can eventually become your future managers and leaders.  Often times, employees can get stuck into a specific role and leaders overlook the valuable assets they already have.

The insights gained from data-based personality assessments like PI Worldwide’s Predictive Index® can improve retention rates by teaching managers to understand the needs and behaviors of their key employees and develop long-term retention strategies.  Organizations looking to build a team or fill positions can use PI Worldwide’s PRO offering to learn what attributes will be critical to success in advance.  In both recruiting and retention, this insight into core personality attributes can be a critical advantage to creating a work environment focused on open communication and delivering high levels of patient care.  Learn more from PI Worldwide’s director of research, Dr. Todd Harris in his video series “3 Steps to Organization Wellness.”

National survey proves value of sales training at leading companies

Jacksonville, FL – Oct. 14, 2009:  PI Worldwide, the parent company of Predictive Results, has been recognized as a provider of market-leading sales training, in a recently published report by the national research firm Aberdeen Group.

Aberdeen analysts noted the sales improvements generated through training at The Yankee Candle Company, the largest candle manufacturer in the United States.  Cited as a best-in-class organization by Aberdeen Group, Yankee Candle is a long-time user of assessment and training services from PI Worldwide.

According to Aberdeen Group’s research, best-in-class organizations increase employee training, to create more meaningful sales conversations and enhance skills. Researchers surveyed more than 500 companies.

“The economy is recovering and strong sales skills are increasingly critical for companies large and small,” said Steve Waterhouse, President and CEO of Predictive Results.  “This report reinforces our findings that companies can find tremendous value in our unique and powerful combination of personalized assessments and sales training approaches that help identify and address a sales team’s strengths and weaknesses.”

More than 7,000 companies in 146 countries already benefit from PI Worldwide’s leading Predictive Index® assessment tool.  As a member of PI Worldwide, Predictive Results also offers companies the Selling Skills Assessment Tool™ (SSAT) and Customer Focused Selling™ (CFS).

Yankee Candle’s Wholesale Division was formally trained in Customer Focused Selling methodologies. The Predictive Index and Selling Skills Assessment Tool provided coaching skills and insight for managers to leverage each individual employee’s natural behavior to sell. These same individuals could then use their newly acquired skills to build optimal relationships with their customers.

“We’ve absolutely seen the benefit of this,” Michael Thorne, Yankee Candle’s senior vice president of wholesale says, as quoted in the Aberdeen Group’s report.  “After the first month, the revenue performance differentiated between our test group and the general staff increased by 40%.”
