Contact lens technology relieves Matt Spears’ corneal dystrophy
Jacksonville, Fla., March 5, 2010: For the past 10 years, Southside resident Matt Spears has been living with keratoconus, the most common corneal dystrophy in the United States that causes the cornea to form a cone-shape, resulting in extreme blurring of all objects. Spears’ condition was so severe he considered learning to read Braille.
“It’s like swimming with your eyes open all day or looking through a kaleidoscope,” Spears said.
Everything changed for Spears early this year when he was referred to Dr. Brian Armitage at Baymeadows Vision Center. Knowing surgery and glasses would not correct his condition, Dr. Armitage prescribed Spears with Scleral lenses, a recently-improved contact lens technology that corrects keratoconus. Scleral lenses cover the entire eye including the white portion (the sclera) and are specially made to vault over the cornea.
Dr. Armitage is known for his extensive contact lens research and the specialty lenses he prescribes to patients. He worked with Spears to custom fit these lenses to his cone-shaped cornea for maximum effectiveness and comfort. With the lenses, Spears’ vision went from 20/400 to 20/35.
Spears and Dr. Armitage recently told their story on Action News Jacksonville. To see the video and read the full story, click here.
